Goldston’s Beach at White Lake Celebrates 100th Anniversary With Facelift and New Name

North Carolina’s premier vacation destination celebrates 100th Anniversary

WHITE LAKE, N.C., March 18, 2021 (PressReleaseNewsCenter.com) – One of North Carolina’s premier vacation destinations, Goldston’s Beach at White Lake, is celebrating its 100th Anniversary this year with a major facelift and new name, The Grand Regal at Goldston’s Beach. The Grand Regal is a collaborative project to include Regal Resort Campground, Carolina Bay, The Venue, Goldston’s Motel and Goldston’s Beach. The thriving business of Regal Resort, Carolina Bay, and The Venue was purchased by Jenna and Dean Hilton from Susan and Ronald Inman. Late Harry Womble’s daughter, Mollie Womble Owen, his grandson Jake Womble and the Hilton’s have invested in Goldston’s Motel and Beach. This new vision between these business partners will lead the resort into the future.

“We are thrilled that Goldston’s Beach is continuing into the fourth generation with Jake at the helm. I think my Dad would be proud and we are happy to carry on his legacy with this exciting and ambitious project,” said Mollie Womble Owen, Partner.

“My grandfather spent more than 80 years creating smiles and memories on this property. My vision is to build on that tradition. In some respects, COVID was a blessing for us. We’ve used this time to clean, paint, and modernize nearly every part of this property including upgrading our accommodations. We’ve also expanded to offer new amenities like kayak and paddleboard rentals, outdoor games, and more,” said Jake Womble, COO.

The vision of The Grand Regal is to implement more modern components that complement the nostalgia everyone has loved around the property. Goldston’s will continue to offer its video arcade, Putt-Putt golf course, vintage 1947 Allan Herschell Carousel, Dairy Queen, and iconic piers including a new pier for boaters to dock and enjoy the facility.

“Some of the rides had been on the property for decades. We hated to see them go, but I’m sure our guests will understand it was time for a change. Moving forward, we do plan to partner with some amusement companies and offer newer rides this summer,” Womble added.

Day parking passes will continue to be offered for local guests to enjoy swimming and the beach area beginning in May. The Grand Regal has also transformed what was once the Bingo Hall into The Glass Bottom, a relaxing place for adults to enjoy live music, food, and beverages overlooking White Lake’s 1,200 acres of crystal clear water and magnificent sunsets.

The Grand Regal has also partnered with The Presley Group to offer a new shopping and dining experience. Goldston’s Gift Shop will now be called The Wake Zone and will include more recreational items like wakeboards, swim gear, and brand attire. The Landing Place will offer daily seafood and dinner options while The Dive Sandwich Shop will include specialty burgers and sandwiches.

The Venue at The Grand Regal, an 8,000 sq. foot wedding and corporate meeting space, is already becoming a popular waterfront wedding destination.

“I’m excited to use my background in interior design and hospitality management to help brides visualize their dream weddings. With the renovation of our cottages, we’re able to offer our couples and their guests accommodations in addition to the catering and event supplies they would need for a full-service experience,” said Jenna Hilton, The Venue at Grand Regal, Owner.

Planning is underway for the 100th Anniversary celebration June 26, 2021 with live music and family fun activities. Concerts and events are also planned for this fall.

“We’re excited about this new endeavor. There’s a lot to offer here at White Lake and we’re anticipating an eventful summer,” said Dean Hilton, Grand Regal Partner.

Re-Enacted Portrait of Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Pitman Hughes in Iconic 1971 Pose of Female Empowerment and Equal Rights Taken by Daniel Bagan Accepted Into Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery Collection

The image of women side-by-side with fists raised in message of equal rights, resonates with a new generation

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla., October 17, 2017 (PressReleaseNewsCenter.com) – A re-enacted photographic portrait of Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Pitman Hughes in their iconic 1971 “raised fists” stance taken by St. Augustine photographer Daniel Bagan, added this month to the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery collection, gives new life to the significance and power of their historic statement of equal rights for women and blacks. More than 45 years since the original Dan Wynn image appeared in Esquire magazine, their message has not dimmed with age.

The portrait will be displayed in the Museum of the City of New York’s exhibition Beyond Suffrage: A Century of New York Women in Politics, which opened on Oct. 10, 2017. It was unveiled on Oct. 9 at the Thomas G. Carpenter Library at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida, where Pitman Hughes lives and continues her activism.

The symbolism of a black and white woman standing together, demonstrating the black power salute is as important now as it was in the 70s.

DOROTHY PITMAN HUGHES

FEMINIST, CHILD WELFARE ADVOCATE AND AFRICAN-AMERICAN ACTIVISTFor Pitman Hughes and Steinem, the new portrait featuring the defiant black power salute again helps open up a dialogue on sexism and racism that is still vitally needed today, while demonstrating their continued hope for positive change.

“We must have difficult conversations, and it’s also important to talk about the learning, growing, friendship and joy that come from having them,” said Steinem. “So it’s important to say that in real life, neither Dorothy nor I would give up — or be the same without — our near half-century of shared hopes, differences, laughter, and friendship.”

The partnership between Steinem and Pitman Hughes began in the early 1970s as the pair took to the podium to discuss the importance of intersectional feminism. Together they founded Ms. Magazine and the Women’s Action Alliance. Decades later, the impact of their partnership has not waned. Steinem and Pitman Hughes remain an inspiration to activists across the country as they continue to push for racial and gender equality.

“The symbolism of a black and white woman standing together, demonstrating the black power salute is as important now as it was in the 70s,” said Pitman Hughes. “A hundred years of the suffrage movement has not eliminated racism, classism and sexism. Black women and white women can make this change together, but not until we acknowledge and resolve the racism problem that stands between us.”

They have struck their side-by-side, raised fists pose many times over the years. But this new portrait’s photographer, Daniel Bagan said the moment was right to re-capture their symbolism.

“The women were dynamically engaged in their iconic stance, and the result was inspiring,” said Bagan. “Even decades later, their power and beauty show no sign of age, just wisdom reflected in their soft smiles.”

About Daniel Bagan

Bagan, based in St. Augustine, Florida, has also launched the “Age of Beauty Project” creating portraits of women between the ages of 50-100. The new Steinem-Pitman Hughes portrait inspired the project, and he shares the proceeds from the sale of their image in support of Pitman Hughes’ continued activism. The project will produce a book titled “Age Of Beauty,” a social commentary on beauty and age. Bagan speaks with women over 50 almost every day, and many say they feel invisible, that they no longer see themselves as beautiful. Bagan hopes the exhibition of his portraits shows that real beauty transcends Madison Avenue’s definition of thin, smooth and young.
